Historic aircraft stand in the hangar of the Flugwerft Schleißheim of the German Museum

Flugwerft Schleissheim Aviation Museum

From wooden aircraft to missiles

Flugwerft Schleißheim Aviation Museum consists of two halls which are home to more than 70 amazing flying objects – from a modern fighter jet to historical wooden aircraft, there's something for everyone, young and old. And you mustn't miss the glass-walled workshop!

Flugwerft in Oberschleißheim is part of the Deutsches Museum, though it is significantly younger than its parent institution on Museumsinsel. Since 1992, visitors have been able to come here to view historical and modern air and space travel exhibits, from exceptional engines and powertrains to a flight simulator. As well as the recently built exhibition hall, the site has restored buildings housing helicopters and aeroplanes from the time of the Royal Bavarian Aviation Battalion – which existed from 1912 to 1919 and was the precursor to the Bavarian air force.

Around 70 flight-related objects with histories spanning an entire century are available for closer inspection, and fans of historical aircraft will be particularly delighted. The major highlight is sure to be the glass-walled restoration workshop, where aircraft are maintained live in front of a viewing audience of guests.

With around 7,500 square metres of exhibition space, there is plenty here for adults and children alike to discover. Alongside modern fighting jets and missiles, there are also wooden aircraft with fabric covering, from the earliest days of flight. There are flying craft that have a direct link to the history of the airfield in Schleißheim, as well as privately owned special-production flyers to explore. Flugwerft Schleißheim also offers ever-changing special exhibitions for you to enjoy.
